We will be teaching Spanish from Reception

Aug 6, 2015
We are pleased to announce that following our last Development Evening, we have decided that the language we will teach from Reception is Spanish.

Spanish makes sense for several reasons:

  • It is one of the easiest European languages to learn.
If taught a second language early enough, the brain develops in a way that makes it much easier to pick up more languages in the future. We therefore felt it was important that the children were able to learn a language as quickly and easily as possible. In Spanish, you pronounce the words as they are written.

  • Spanish is taught at our partner school.
The Spanish teacher at Broadfields is already involved in helping to develop our curriculum. Broadfields will continue to support our school in our early years, making sure we can benefit from a specialist language teacher even when we are new.

  • Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world.
But unlike Mandarin, which is the most widely spoken, there are a good number of primary school teachers in the UK who speak some Spanish. We want to be able to recruit the best teachers for our school, so making sure we can cast our net as widely as possible to find them is important.

Learning a second language is such an crucial skill, but one we feel should be seen as completely normal. Spanish will be integrated into our curriculum, starting with games and songs and gradually increasing as the children grow in confidence and ability. Eventually whole lessons will be delivered in the second language, as part of the thematic curriculum - not as an after-thought or extra.

It is with the greatest sadness that we have to announce that the Schools’ Minister has decided to cancel Mariposa Primary School. Although both the Department for Education and Harrow Council agree that two new primary schools are needed in this part of Harrow, the Council is adamant that the new schools must be on the re-developed Kodak and Civic Centre sites, despite saying last year that they didn’t favour any free school over another. Without Harrow Council’s support, the Minister is not prepared to continue with the project.

Our Head Teacher interviews last month went really well - huge thanks to all the children and teachers at Broadfields and the group of prospective Mariposa parents who came along to help. We are really pleased to say that we have been successful in recruiting our very first Head Teacher.
