We have some good news, and some bad news

We have some good news, and some bad news.

The good news is that, subject to planning permission, we are a whisker away from having a site!

We are unable to announce its location yet until contracts have been exchanged.  However, it meets – in fact, exceeds – what we’d hoped for. It is in the North West of the borough and it has ample green space. We will have space for our outdoor classrooms, for forest school, for fun playgrounds and for sport.

We are so lucky, and so relieved. We have had to fight really hard to secure this site.

The really bad news.

On Thursday we were given a choice. We could have taken a site that did not meet any of our requirements, but that would have been possible to get us open for September 2016, or to take the perfect site, and delay opening.
I hope you will understand that it is with great personal pain that we have decided to opt for the perfect site and delay opening the school until September 2017.

We have produced a series of FAQs about what happens next and Ros has written a personal blog to give you a bit more background and show just how hard we’ve fought.

If you would still like to support Mariposa Primary School, this does now give more opportunity – and time, to do that. We aim to announce the site in January, after which we will be able to involve a much larger group of people in developing plans for that site. We do still need to secure planning permission, and will want to work with the community as we go through that process.

We will also be consulting on which years to open with – if there is sufficient demand, we are more than happy to put a case forward to the Department for Education to open with more year groups. And we will be opening several new positions to join our steering committee, which is the group pushing forward the school’s development.

Thank you, everyone, for your support over the incredible last 18 months. Our hearts go out to those of you who were hoping your children could join the school in 2016. I had planned for my own son to be amongst them. However, if you are prepared to wait for 2017, we now know that the site will be worth that wait.

We have cancelled our planned open evening on 1st December, and will not be accepting any applications until September next year.

However, I hope to see many of you in January when we can unveil the site that we expect to be secured for the school and start the next, exciting stage of our journey.

It is with the greatest sadness that we have to announce that the Schools’ Minister has decided to cancel Mariposa Primary School. Although both the Department for Education and Harrow Council agree that two new primary schools are needed in this part of Harrow, the Council is adamant that the new schools must be on the re-developed Kodak and Civic Centre sites, despite saying last year that they didn’t favour any free school over another. Without Harrow Council’s support, the Minister is not prepared to continue with the project.

Our Head Teacher interviews last month went really well - huge thanks to all the children and teachers at Broadfields and the group of prospective Mariposa parents who came along to help. We are really pleased to say that we have been successful in recruiting our very first Head Teacher.
