Mariposa Primary School – now opening September 2018

Nov 17, 2016
With great sadness we can today confirm that Mariposa Primary School will no longer be opening in 2017, but will instead plan to open in September 2018, in our new permanent site.

As many of our parents and supporters know, a few weeks ago we were unexpectedly alerted by the Department for Education that they were reviewing our plans for a 2017 opening. Our team would have preferred to continue aiming for 2017, as we are on-track and we know the heartache delay will cause for many families. When asked, over 80% of parents wanted the opportunity to apply for 2017, even with the risk we may not receive planning permission in time. However, after appealing directly to Lord Nash, the minister who oversees the free school programme, his view is that our school should instead open in 2018.

Our Head Teacher, Tracey Francis, will still join us in January 2017 as planned, which gives her a lot more time to work with families and the local community as we develop plans for the school. She will work with our team to involve and support families looking to join us in 2018, and we are looking at the possibility of running children’s activities or a regular club.

In 2018, as well as offering Reception and Year 1 classes as we had always planned, we will be able to open our Nursery and will also seek to admit a Year 3 class. Opening is still dependent on getting planning permission, but we should be able to confirm our plans by the Spring. We will also be opening in our new building, rather than a temporary unit as planned, which is hugely exciting and undoubtedly gives us immediate access to a lot more physical resources straight away.

We know how disappointed many will be with this news – we wholeheartedly share your feelings. We hope that you will continue to support us and stay involved. We believe our school really is one of a kind, developed by and with local families and teachers. In the end, it will be worth the hard work and wait.

Do continue to comment and like our posts on Facebook and social media, stay in touch via email ( or by giving us a call (020 8945 3123). We will shortly announce an event in the new year where you can come and chat to the team and welcome Tracey into her new role.

Yours sincerely,

The Mariposa Teams

It is with the greatest sadness that we have to announce that the Schools’ Minister has decided to cancel Mariposa Primary School. Although both the Department for Education and Harrow Council agree that two new primary schools are needed in this part of Harrow, the Council is adamant that the new schools must be on the re-developed Kodak and Civic Centre sites, despite saying last year that they didn’t favour any free school over another. Without Harrow Council’s support, the Minister is not prepared to continue with the project.

Our Head Teacher interviews last month went really well - huge thanks to all the children and teachers at Broadfields and the group of prospective Mariposa parents who came along to help. We are really pleased to say that we have been successful in recruiting our very first Head Teacher.
